February may be the month of love, but this month is also part of divorce season. It may seem counter-intuitive with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, but there’s an unfortunate spike in divorce filings between February and March every year.
A paper from the University of Washington graphed the divorce spike during these months as well as one in August. The findings are reinforced by a noted increase in searches for terms like “divorce” and “child custody” during the same months.
Why do more people take the leap to dissolve their marriages during this time of year? The researchers speculate that couples may avoid announcing divorce decisions during the holidays. Instead, they may wait until the stretch of Thanksgiving, Christmas and/or Hanukah, and New Year’s Eve is over. This theory is even more plausible for families with children.
No matter the time of year, divorce takes a toll on everyone involved. Our goal at Petrelli law is to guide our divorcing clients and their families through the months to come, while minimizing stress and confusion. That means customizing the approach for each couple’s needs – whether through litigation or settling in mediation.
